National Geographic Society

The client: National Geographic Society. The Society has been inspiring people to care about the planet since 1888. It is one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions in the world.

The Challenge: When John Griffin joined National Geographic Society as President of the Magazine Division, his goal was to leverage the NG Brand that was built as a result of 100 years of publishing National Geographic Magazine. He wanted to re-invigorate and redesign the magazines, as well as grow Traveler and NG Kids.

How the Challenge was met: John retained Take Charge Consultants, Inc. to provide consulting services to address a broad range of organizational issues including: his transition to President of both Magazine and Books Divisions, the design of retreats that engaged the staff in addressing issues such as growth, profitability, process reengineering, team building, re-design of magazines, and future business planning.

Outcomes: since 2003, the following results have been realized:

  • Redesign of both NG and Traveler Magazines
  • Redesign and relaunch of Kids Magazine to make it fastest growing magazine in USA
  • Ad sales for Kids Magazine that exceeded projections
  • Re-engineered magazine and book production processes resulting in over $250,000 in savings and significantly reducing time to press.
  • Expansion of international book business
  • A motivated, engaged staff
