Although there is still no one single answer to the question “what makes a great leader?” there are some things successful leaders have in common.  According to a study of 300,000 business leaders conducted by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, there are ten crucial leadership competencies:

  1. Inspires and motivates others with a clear compelling vision.
  2. Displays high integrity and honestythey are transparent and walk their talk.
  3. Solves problems and analyzes issuesthey employ collaborative problem solving.
  4. Drives for results they get things done through perseverance.
  5. Communicates powerfully and prolifically
  6. Builds relationships – through trust.
  7. Displays technical or professional expertise they become experts in their field.
  8. Displays a strategic perspective – they don’t get stuck in the weeds.
  9. Develops othersthey focus on growing the next generation of leaders.
  10. Innovateshas energy and ideas for doing new things better, faster, cheaper.

What to do?

  1. Determine how well your managers and aspiring managers demonstrate the 10 competencies that lead to success.
  2. Implement easy to access, just-in-time developmental activities to fill in any gaps.
  3. Follow-up – coach and consult with learners over the rough spots and recognize and reinforce their progress.
