Just In! COVID-19 Crisis – a 2020 Space Oddity

August 19th, 2020

What’s hot?

Leading through the Pandemic feels like David Bowie’s Space Oddity:

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

So what?

Good leaders focus on a vision – it’s motivational. Yet, providing inspiration is challenging when people are uncertain about the ground beneath their feet. More than vision is needed. But what more?

What to do?

Recognize that crises test visions.  Crises are the natural call to action.  When the crop fails, or business is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, people don’t need to be inspired. They naturally take action. However, to ensure that it is the right action – one that ensures movement toward your vision rather than a panic-driven response – leaders must provide solid ground so people can act purposefully.

Three proven “grounding” strategies to ensure action aligned with your vision:

  1. Constant, candid communication. People are better equipped to deal with harsh realities than we imagine. They prefer the straight skinny to positive hyperbole.
  2. Hold people to high standards. It sends a message of confidence in them and in the organization. And, it focuses their actions on the future and what’s most important to get there.
  3. Put processes in place that reassure people about job security and how much they are valued.
