Enlightenment: A lesson in Mindful Leadership

June 23rd, 2011

Enlightenment is the capacity to still the mind in a way that opens up resources and insights that would otherwise lay dormant or remain uncovered. It is the outcome when one accesses the “aha”.  Buddhist psychology, as well as recent neuroscience, paints a three step process outlined below for finding your way to the “aha” space.

To strengthen this gift:
  • Hold your troubles and challenges lightly. Be aware of the few high-level issues. Focus with the soft attention you experience upon waking up in the morning. No judgment, simply curious attention.
  • Adopt the belief that answers, solutions, courses of action, and resolutions are accessible when you empty your mind of distractions.
  • Be aware of reactions, emotions, worries and desires. Notice them and allow them to fade. This opens an empty space into which new thoughts and insights can emerge.
  • When the “aha” arises, act quickly. Insights come with a powerful, but short lived emotional surge. Acting early enables you to be more courageous in your action and more dedicated to making a difference.
