Building a Mindful Leadership Practice

July 14th, 2011

Do you read about Mindful Leadership and think it sounds good, but how? Much has been written about the benefits of building a mindful organization. Not so much about the how-to techniques and best practices. Here are practical, proven practices that will enable you to be more mindful; to reconnect with yourself and engage and inspire your followers.

5 Practical Practices (do one each day at home)

Take in the moment – reconnect with the awe of daily living. Take in the beauty of nature on the way to work, the smile of a baby while in the grocery line, or the older couple holding hands on the train.

Dwell on your “blessings.” Studies conducted by Marquette University revealed that leaders who spend a few minutes a day reflecting on those things for which they are grateful are more resilient, effective, and transformative. Start a journal dedicated exclusively to the positive aspects of your life. Add at least one new entry a day.

Deepen your relationships. In addition to providing a sense of happiness and well-being, relationships provide the social support and encouragement necessary for goal achievement. How broad is your social support system? How deep are your connections? What one thing can you do to build a broader and deeper network?

Practice compassionate candor. Think about a relationship that’s really important to you. What information do you hold in abeyance so as not to risk losing your armor, your place, your power, or face? Try these steps to let go:

- Take a hard look at your recent actions and behaviors. What have you said and/or done?

- What motivated those behaviors (ego, yes, but why? What was the driver?)

- Where does the driver come from?

- What would it take to let it go?

- What small step can you take today in order to free yourself (and the other)?

Be still. Focus on your breathing. Relax your mind. Allow your thoughts to dissolve and float away. Aim for a 2-5 minute period of stillness. Increase over time.
